Spoken English is an integrated approach to the learning of practical English conversational skills. The course will familiarise students with the sounds and syntax of English, and the use of the language in communication. It is taught at Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
Each course session begins with speech training. The International Phonetic Alphabet is taught at the beginning of every course, to provide a common basis for discussing the sounds of English. Students will practice speech sounds, as well as English stress, rhythm and intonation patterns. Special difficulties that Asian speakers encounter are emphasised.
Linguistic research in Singapore and other Asian countries has established that most grammatical errors fall into patterns. The grammar lessons in the English Conversation Course are guided by this insight, concentrating on the aspects of grammar that pose problems for Asian speakers.
There is no entry requirement for this course.
